Over the past 6 months, we have configured and implemented the open source learning management system (LMS) Moodle for two distinctive health systems based in Chennai, India. The goal centered around enhancing access and availability to standardized, reusable health education materials for improved quality of care and patient outcomes. Both health systems saw the benefits of transitioning to e-learning for their training and educational needs, but due to their unique organizational structures, specific goals and use cases, the LMS implementation strategy needed specific tailoring to each health system.

Be Well wanted to efficiently standardize training across their 7 satellite unit health system to enhance the quality and consistency of care being provided. Regular meetings with stakeholders allowed us to reach an implementation strategy centered around effective change management where there would be a phased transition to the e-learning system, helping to gain local buy-in and demonstrate e-learning advantages.

Collaborating with our partners at Sundaram Medical Foundation (SMF), we focused adoption within select departments; developing their expertise and expanding their usage of the LMS before expanding to the hospital as a whole. These system champions will then promote the effectiveness and value of the LMS as it becomes a larger part of the existing educational program throughout the health system.

Through hands-on training and diligent groundwork, each health system is now equipped with expert LMS users, process workflows, a supported IT infrastructure, and growing support for the LMS, to enable e-learning and promote sustainability.
